Curtis Fine Papers is an environmental leader in the paper industry, having pioneered the production of fully and part recycled papers. They were the first UK manufacturer to publish an environmental report in 1993, and have published two updates since, in 1995 and 1998. These reports set out their environmental targets and openly report progress on achievement of these targets. Their latest update relates each input and output in the manufacturing process of one tonne of paper, to help make the data relevant and easy to understand.

EMAS
Curtis Fine Papers' two Scottish mills are still the only paper mills in the UK to be accredited to EMAS, the EU's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. This follows early accreditation to the International Environmental Management Standard, ISO 14001, with their Guardbridge mill the first to have achieved the equivalent UK Standard BS 7750.

Curtis has invested over £4m since 1992 on improvements to reduce the environmental impact of their operations.

We have used Curtis products since our companies inception.

The Carpenters Fellowship. In recent years there has been a revival of traditional timber framing skills in the UK. New oak-framed houses, barns and public buildings are being constructed using carpentry techniques virtually unchanged in five centuries.Historic timber frame buildings are beingsympathetically repaired and restored.

Carpenters, Architects, Engineers, Conservationists and Historians are learning from each other about how best to design and build new timber frames and preserve historic ones.

The Carpenters Fellowship was set up in September 2000 to increase communication, training and sharing of knowledge amongst those interested in historic and new oak framed structures.

The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation. It is an association of Members founded by a diverse group of representatives from environmental and social groups, the timber trade and forestry profession, manufacturers and retailers, indigenous people's organisations, community forestry groups and forest product certification organisations from around the world. Membership is open to all who share its aims and objectives.

It provides an umbrella organisation and structure within which qualified independent certifiers can operate according to clear guidelines and using agreed standards covering social, environmental and economic aspects of forest management drawn up by professionals in forestry as well as in ecology and in rural and social development.

Once certified, timber and timber-based products originating from that forest or woodland are eligible to carry the FSC Trademark, thus identifying the products as coming from FSC certified forests. Only products which are so certified are legally authorised to carry the FSC Trademark.

FSC therefore provides an incentive in the marketplace for good forestry practice.

The The Forestry Commission of Great Britain is the government department responsible for the protection and expansion of Britain's forests and woodlands.

Their objectives are to:

    Protect Britain's forests and woodlands
    Expand Britain's forest area
Enhance the economic value of our forest resources
Conserve and improve the biodiversity, landscape and cultural heritage of our forests and woodlands
    Develop opportunities for woodland recreation
Increase public understanding and community participation in forestry
Independent Forestry. Demand is coming from all sectors for FSC certified products. Chain of Custody clearly demonstrates that a product originates in woodlands which have been independently certified in accordance with the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council.

Chain of Custody is inherent in every business. You buy and you sell and so you already keep records. Independent forestry does not look to impose anything on you when we carry out a c.o.c audit. Rather we look to introduce into your exiting systems ways of ensuring transparent chain of custody.

We carry a lap top computer and printer and have customised checklists for a range of different businesses. We also have pre-written procedures which can be further customised to suit your particular situation and requirements.

The FSC set up the group schemes specifically for “small businesses” which they define as either a business directly employing up to 15 people or a business which employs between 16 and 25 people but having a turnover of less than 25. This second category of business simply does not exist in the UK!
